Sweden Introduces Digital Ballot Cards for Upcoming Elections

Sweden is set to introduce digital ballot cards for the first time in the upcoming elections, aiming to make the process more accessible and secure. Over six million voters are expected to receive their ballot cards digitally if they have a registered digital mailbox, such as Kivra, Billo, or Min myndighetspost. Those without a digital mailbox will continue to receive paper versions.

This initiative, approved by parliament last year, also simplifies the voting process. Voters will no longer need to bring their physical or digital ballot card to the polling station; a valid identification document will suffice. However, the introduction of new technology for recording early votes might test the patience of some voters. Election Authority officials acknowledge that the process could be slower, especially on the first day, as election workers adapt to the new system. To ensure accuracy, new technology using pre-printed codes on envelopes will help direct early votes to the correct polling stations for counting. The Election Authority has backup plans in place should the technology falter.
