Sweden Reintroduces Home Energy Efficiency Grants Up to 60,000 Kronor

Swedish homeowners can once again access government support for energy efficiency improvements, with a grant program offering up to 60,000 kronor available starting September 1. This initiative, known as "villaeffekten," aims to encourage homeowners to invest in measures that reduce energy consumption and heating costs.

The grant is available to owners of houses not connected to district heating networks and primarily heated by electricity or gas. The property must also have been built before 1990 and serve as the owner's permanent residence; the support does not extend to holiday homes. Eligible improvements include additional insulation, draft-proofing, window and door upgrades, and modifications to heating systems, such as installing pellet stoves or heat pumps (excluding air-to-air models), or connecting to district heating.

Applicants can receive up to 30% of the material costs, capped at a maximum of 60,000 kronor. This means the total material expenditure eligible for the grant is 200,000 kronor. While homeowners can apply twice, the overall maximum remains 60,000 kronor. The grant can be combined with the ROT deduction for labor costs. However, grants for amounts less than 10,000 kronor will not be issued.

Applications for measures initiated after October 17, 2025, must be submitted by February 28, 2027. The funding for this program is allocated until 2030, with 300 million kronor set aside annually. This budget is expected to support approximately 5,000 homes per year if each applicant claims the maximum amount. Applications are handled by the county administrative board in the relevant county, with payments disbursed after the completion of the work.
