Sweden's Streets: E-Scooter Accidents Surge on High-Risk Roads

Electric scooter accidents are surging, disproportionately affecting children and young people, according to recent reports. The majority of these incidents occur in urban settings, with specific streets in Stockholm and Gothenburg highlighted as particularly dangerous.

In Stockholm, Birger Jarlsgatan, a long street known for its clubs and restaurants, is identified as a hotspot. Residents Annika Jansson and Linda Birgersson expressed unease, noting that e-scooter riders often disregard traffic rules, such as running red lights. They observed that riders frequently travel at high speeds on the long, straight stretches of the road.

Sveavägen, another major Stockholm street with heavy car traffic, also sees frequent accidents. Olle Ronach admitted to having accidents himself while riding under the influence of alcohol, including a crash into a brick wall after being distracted by his phone. Jacqline Mossberg, while not a frequent rider herself, noted that her mother enjoys e-scooters.

Ringvägen in Stockholm, a three-kilometer street with bus traffic and a bike lane, is also a concern. Lalle Johnson, who uses e-scooters for errands, believes they are safe if ridden sober and competently, but acknowledged that many riders are not in a suitable condition, especially at certain times of day.

In Gothenburg, Kungsportsavenyn, famously known as "Avenyn," is a busy street with many clubs, shops, and restaurants. Louise Emanuelsson and Martina Falk, who prefer walking, find e-scooters complicated to use and are aware of the frequent injuries. Falk recalled a friend who sustained serious injuries after colliding with a car door on Avenyn. Östra Hamngatan, another Gothenburg street, is also noted as a high-risk area.
