Swedish Military Demands Government Seize Property Blocking Naval Base Access

Amid heightened concerns over Russian threats following its invasion of Ukraine, the Swedish military has formally requested the government to expropriate a piece of real estate situated near a vital naval base. The property is reportedly owned by a Russian businessman allegedly linked to the Kremlin.

The Swedish Armed Forces stated that the property lies along a crucial access route to the Muskö Naval Base. They described its location as having "unique conditions for strengthening the defense of the Muskö Naval Base, especially in countering drones." The military emphasized that the development of Russian drone warfare capabilities has significantly altered the threat landscape, necessitating measures to counter aerial and maritime unmanned vehicle threats.

According to the military, this specific property is currently the "only" location not under military control that is essential for establishing effective defenses for the base, particularly against drone threats. Swedish media reports identify the property owner as Russian businessman Stanislav Aleshchenko, though it is nominally registered under his wife's name. Aleshchenko has been reported to have connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Furthermore, Swedish media had previously reported that Aleshchenko planned to construct a large holiday residence on the site, a project the Swedish government is reportedly working to block.

The Muskö Naval Base, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Stockholm, was a highly classified underground facility built during the Cold War, designed to withstand nuclear attacks. Although the Swedish Navy Command relocated away from it in the 1990s, it moved back in 2019 in response to perceived Russian threats. Sweden ended its nearly two-century-long policy of military non-alignment after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 2024.
