Swedish Sailors' Boats Trapped by French Wildfires; Championship Canceled

Swedish sailors Thomas and Pippi Windrike from Täby are facing an unexpected ordeal in Lacanau, France, as wildfires rage near Bordeaux. Their planned participation in the F-16 World Championship, which was set to begin on July 27, 2026, has been canceled. Compounding their difficulties, their two racing sailboats and equipment are trapped within a cordoned-off area due to the fires.

She described the situation as a "first-world problem" in the grand scheme of the fires, but acknowledged the immediate distress. Their trailer, loaded with two boats, an F-18 and an F-16, is currently inaccessible.

The couple had already experienced a setback when their F-18 European Championship participation in Italy was cut short by a collision. They had hoped the F-16 World Championship in France would proceed smoothly. However, upon approaching the Gironde region, they were informed that the initial fire was under control, only to be ordered to evacuate their accommodation late Friday night as the situation worsened.

They spent the night in their car at an evacuation center in Salle before moving further north to Arcachon. While they are now in a safer location, the fate of their boats remains uncertain. "At best, we will get a military escort to get them out, but everything is very uncertain right now," Pippi Windrike explained. Authorities have described the wildfire as "stabilized" but far from controlled, with shifting winds posing a continued risk. It is estimated that it could take two weeks before the area is deemed safe enough for retrieval operations.
