Swiss Court Annuls Building Permit for Isenau Multifunctional Center

A judicial ruling has stalled the ambitious revitalization of the Isenau resort area in Switzerland. The administrative court has revoked the building permit for a planned multi-functional center, a key component of the project. The cooperative Isenau 360 had secured the permit to renovate and expand the existing mountain restaurant.

Judges determined that the project's potential consequences for the "Moilles" low marsh, a site of national importance, were not adequately assessed. This decision, issued on July 29, supports a private landowner who had previously challenged a zoning plan for Isenau, leading to its annulment by the Federal Tribunal in 2020.

The court's ruling specifically targets the transformation of the Isenau refuge and does not encompass the entire rehabilitation plan. This larger initiative, aimed at reopening the resort closed since 2017, includes a new cable car, the reactivation of ski lifts, and the development of year-round tourist activities. The estimated cost for this revival is 24.5 million Swiss francs, contingent on ongoing new planning efforts.
