Swiss drone startups relocate abroad due to export rules

Switzerland, like much of Europe, is experiencing a surge in defense sector startups, with many young companies focusing on drone technology. However, several of these promising ventures, initially founded in Switzerland, have chosen to move their operational bases to other countries. This exodus is primarily driven by the nation's stringent export laws concerning military hardware.

The relocation of these innovative companies highlights a tension between Switzerland's desire to bolster its defense industry and its long-standing commitment to strict neutrality and arms export controls. While the government aims to support domestic defense capabilities, including the creation of a drone battalion and recruitment school, the restrictive export framework appears to be hindering the growth and international reach of its homegrown drone sector.

This issue has significant political implications. In December 2025, the Swiss parliament passed a measure to relax regulations on the export and re-export of war material, granting the Federal Council more flexibility. However, this legislative change is not without controversy and faces a popular vote via referendum on November 29.

The upcoming vote will determine whether Switzerland will ease its stance on military exports, potentially creating a more favorable environment for defense-related businesses.
