Swiss fencer Lucas Malcotti wins world championship gold

Lucas Malcotti has become the first Swiss fencer to win an individual épée world championship, securing gold at the event in Hong Kong. He triumphed over Italy's Davide Di Veroli with a close 12:11 victory in the final.

This win represents the pinnacle of Malcotti's career, surpassing his previous team gold in 2018. He is also the first Swiss man to achieve an individual world title in fencing; Anja Straub previously won the women's title in 1989.

Malcotti's path to victory included a dominant performance against Hungary's Gergely Siklosi in the round of 16. However, he faced tougher challenges in the quarterfinals and semifinals, both of which went into overtime. He narrowly defeated Dimitri Schwelidse of Russia 12:11 and then Khalifah Alomairi of Saudi Arabia 13:12 to reach the final.

"It's incredible," Malcotti exclaimed after his win. He only took the lead in the final with just over a minute left in the match, having trailed earlier in the bout.
