Swiss Man Arrested on Suspicion of Deadly Rave Shooting: Police

A 43-year-old Swiss man has been arrested over a shooting that killed an Italian woman as an annual rave in Aarau was winding down, police said.

Several shots were fired early Sunday at a group of people at the racecourse in Aarau, the capital of Switzerland’s northern Aargau canton. The attack prompted an international manhunt after the shooter fled.

Aargau police said the man was apprehended shortly before 1 a.m. Monday and arrested on strong suspicion of having committed the crime. “At this stage, it is believed a lone perpetrator was involved,” police said.

The 22-year-old Italian woman died instantly despite attempts to resuscitate her, police said. Five other people were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Aargau police identified them as four Swiss men and a German woman, aged between 24 and 31. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had said Sunday that two Italians were among those wounded, but the cantonal police later gave a different account of the injured victims.

Investigators are examining the exact sequence of events, the background to the attack and a possible motive.
