Swiss Neutrality Initiative Threatens Security Policy, Ex-Minister Warns

Former Swiss Federal Councilor Micheline Calmy-Rey has voiced strong opposition to the "Safeguard Swiss Neutrality" initiative, arguing it poses a significant threat to the country's security policy and international cooperation.

Calmy-Rey, who plans to vote no on the initiative, contends that its proponents seek to enshrine permanent, armed neutrality in the constitution. She argues this would strip the Federal Council of its foreign policy flexibility, a crucial tool in navigating a complex global landscape.

The initiative, according to Calmy-Rey, introduces novel elements that could obstruct Switzerland's established security approach. This approach, she explains, is a comprehensive strategy that integrates diplomacy, intelligence, and economic measures alongside the military in response to evolving geopolitical threats and globalization.

She emphasizes that Switzerland faces the challenge of balancing threat assessment with the practicalities of modern security. The initiative, in her view, would create an "obstacle" to this delicate balance, potentially isolating Switzerland and weakening its ability to engage effectively on the international stage.
