Swiss runner Lobalu finishes seventh in tactical 5000m at European Championships

Dominic Lobalu narrowly missed a medal at the European Championships in Birmingham, finishing seventh in a tactical 5000-meter race. The Swiss runner attempted to dictate the pace of the competition, but the field remained largely unresponsive until the final two laps. In a grueling final push, Lobalu was unable to maintain contact with the leaders, ultimately falling behind as Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen secured the gold medal with a dominant performance.

This result marks a setback for Lobalu, who achieved significant success in 2024, winning bronze in the 5000m and becoming the first Swiss European champion in the 10,000m. Since then, the St. Gallen-based athlete has been plagued by minor injuries. He recently struggled with muscular tension in his lower back, which radiated into his glutes and hamstring. This led him to withdraw from a 3000m race in Lucerne and forgo the Swiss Championships as a precautionary measure.

Lobalu has been working with his medical team to address the root causes of these issues. While he appears to be physically fit, he is not yet exhibiting the top form he displayed in 2024. He will have another opportunity to compete and potentially secure a medal in the 10,000-meter race, where he is expected to participate.

In other athletics news, Florian Bremm of Germany secured a silver medal in the men's 5000m, finishing second to Ingebrigtsen after a thrilling sprint finish. Meanwhile, Géraldine Di Tizio-Frey of Switzerland impressed in the women's 100m semifinals, winning her heat in 11.02 seconds and positioning herself as a strong medal contender for the final. Salomé Kora also qualified for the 100m final, ensuring Swiss representation in the event.
