Sydney Trains Resume Normal Service After Wiring Chaos

Sydney's rail network is back to normal operations today after a significant disruption on Friday evening caused by falling overhead wires. The incident led to widespread chaos and forced passengers to be evacuated from trains.

I want to apologise to passengers who were impacted by delays on the rail network in Sydney on Friday night. Teams have worked right through the night last night and all six lines through the area are now fully reopened with normal weekend services operating, but a reminder that track work is in place in Western Sydney today. We'll be investigating the root cause of the incident throughout the weekend.

Late Friday afternoon, overhead wires came down onto a South Coast Line service traveling between Redfern and Erskineville. This caused the train to stop abruptly, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. Transport authorities quickly isolated power to the affected area to ensure the safe removal of commuters.

Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland apologized for the disruption. He confirmed that teams worked through the night to repair the damage. All six lines in the affected area have been fully reopened, and normal weekend services are now operating. However, Longland noted that planned track work is still in place in Western Sydney for today.

An investigation into the root cause of the wiring incident will be conducted throughout the weekend. Jas Tumber, head of rail operations at Sydney Trains, had previously stated that the cause was unknown at the time of the disruption, emphasizing the significant impact it had on the network.
