Syria's Al-Sharaa reshuffles security and intelligence leadership

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has initiated a significant shake-up of the nation's security and intelligence apparatus, consolidating power under the Interior Minister and appointing a new intelligence chief. These changes are presented by the government as crucial steps to bolster national security and pave the way for reconstruction.

Anas Khattab, the Interior Minister, has been given the additional responsibility of leading the National Security Bureau, which oversees various security agencies. This move places him in a powerful position, unifying oversight of the security apparatus. Hussein al-Salamah has been named deputy head of the bureau, Mulham al-Shantout appointed assistant interior minister for security affairs, and Abdul Qader Tahan is the new head of the General Intelligence Service.

According to Omer Ozkizilcik, a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council's Syria Project, the reshuffle appears to formalize power structures established during al-Sharaa's previous administration in Idlib. This suggests an effort to centralize control over Syria's fragmented security forces.

The restructuring follows a period of heightened security incidents. An explosion in Damascus on July 2 killed at least 10 people, and a subsequent attack five days later injured 36. Syrian authorities attributed these incidents to an ISIL-linked cell and reported tracing suspects through surveillance footage. Additionally, customs officers in Iraq recently intercepted a shipment of missiles and drones bound for Hezbollah.
