Syria Seeks Security Accord with Israel for Comprehensive Peace

Syria is actively pursuing a security agreement with Israel, aiming to establish a path toward comprehensive peace, according to interim President Ahmed al-Scharaa. He indicated that Syria, along with several other countries, is engaged in efforts to finalize such a deal.

Al-Scharaa expressed hope that the agreement would lead to a broader peace, as reported by Al Jazeera. This initiative follows a previous understanding reached in January 2026 between Israel and Syria to establish a US-supervised communication channel. This channel was intended to facilitate coordination on intelligence, security, and trade matters, as well as to resolve disputes and prevent misunderstandings.

Discussions have reportedly centered on regulating the presence of Syrian and Israeli troops and security forces in the border region. The two nations have been in a state of war since 1948, with the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel in 1967 and annexed in 1981, remaining a central point of dispute. Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights is not recognized internationally.
