Tabilo Battles Past Popyrin to Reach US Open Third Round

Alejandro Tabilo fought through a difficult four-set match against Alexei Popyrin to reach the third round of the 2026 US Open.

The Chilean, ranked 28th in the world, lost the opening set 6-2 after Popyrin secured two key breaks. The Australian, ranked 130th and formerly No. 19, then battled through two sets without a break of serve.

Tabilo edged both of those sets in tiebreaks, winning them 7-6(4) and 7-6(3). The momentum carried into the fourth set, where he played solidly and unsettled Popyrin. At 4-1 down, Popyrin requested a medical timeout.

The Australian fought to extend the match in the final game, but Tabilo held firm to complete a 2-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(3), 6-2 victory in three hours and 22 minutes on Court 7 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He then celebrated with people close to him beside the stands.

Tabilo’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between Germany’s Alexander Zverev, ranked second, and France’s Quentin Halys, ranked 52nd. That match is scheduled to close Thursday’s program on the main court.
