Tadej Pogačar withdraws from Vuelta a España after crash

Slovenian cycling sensation Tadej Pogačar has been forced to abandon the Vuelta a España, the only Grand Tour he has yet to win, after a dramatic crash during the eighth stage on Saturday. Pogačar, who had been in a dominant position and was widely expected to secure victory, was riding near the front of the main group when the incident occurred.

Approximately 33 kilometers from the finish line of what was described as a relatively flat stage, Pogačar reportedly moved too close to the edge of the road. This proximity led to a loss of control, causing him to fall. In his fall, he also brought down the rider directly beside him in the peloton.

While other riders quickly recovered, Pogačar remained on the ground for an extended period. Medical personnel were swiftly on the scene to attend to the two-time world champion and five-time Tour de France winner. Visible abrasions were noted on his body and head, particularly on the left side. His left arm was immobilized, indicating a potential collarbone fracture.

Visibly distressed, Pogačar was assisted by the medical team and members of his UAE Emirates-XRG team to a waiting ambulance. His withdrawal marks a significant and unfortunate turn of events in the race, ending his strong bid for a Vuelta title. The team later confirmed his withdrawal via social media, wishing him a speedy recovery.
