Taichung City Promotes Marriage and Childbirth with High-Altitude Weddings and Matchmaking Events

Taichung City is actively encouraging marriage and childbirth with innovative programs, aiming to boost the city's birth rate. Mayor Lu Shiow-yen is set to officiate a wedding ceremony for 66 couples aboard a flight at 10,000 feet, a unique event that attracted 1,463 initial registrations.

The "chosen couples" were selected through a lottery on August 19th. This initiative is part of a broader effort to support newlyweds, with the city planning a honeymoon trip to Okinawa for the 66 selected pairs.

In parallel, the Nantun District household registration office hosted a matchmaking event themed around the area's historical name, "Litoudian." The event invited 40 single men and women to connect over coffee and participate in activities like making scented orange soap. This fostered interaction and led to 18 pairs expressing mutual interest, resulting in a 90% matchmaking rate.

Taichung's marriage registration numbers have shown an upward trend over the past four years, consistently exceeding the national average. In 2023, 387 couples registered, followed by 600 in 2024, 455 in 2025, and a projected 657 this year. These figures highlight the effectiveness of the city's pro-family policies.
