Taichung hot pot restaurant couple absconds with funds; netizens note 'premeditated' shop names

A couple operating the 'Dan Shui Gun' hot pot restaurant in Taichung, Taiwan, has allegedly fled to China with substantial amounts of money, leaving investors in distress. The owners, identified by the surname Huang and Hong, are suspected of absconding after facing investment losses, with their entire family of four reportedly seeking refuge abroad.

Victims have come forward, with the number of affected individuals reaching nearly 500. The total financial losses are estimated to exceed 5 billion New Taiwan Dollars (NT$). Numerous victims have already filed police reports accusing the couple of fraud. The couple also operated a travel agency named 'Dan Qu Tao,' a credit investigation firm, and other leisure businesses in the Daya district.

In a peculiar turn of events, a local group from Daya had booked a trip to China through the 'Dan Qu Tao' travel agency. The female owner, Hong, reportedly met the group in Shanghai on May 28th and accompanied them for two days before separating from them and disappearing. This incident has led to widespread speculation among netizens.

Online commentators have pointed out the phonetic similarity between the hot pot restaurant's name, 'Dan Shui Gun' (丹水滾), and the travel agency's name, 'Dan Qu Tao' (丹趣淘). Some netizens humorously interpreted the names as a coded message: 'Dan Shui Gun Wan' (丹水滾完 - when the hot pot is finished) followed by 'Dan Qu Tao' (丹去逃 - then go and escape), suggesting the escape might have been planned and hinted at through the business names.
