Taichung junior high school to renovate aging athletic field with $8 million NTD

The athletic field at Shenzun Junior High School in Taichung, Taiwan, is set to receive a significant upgrade, with nearly 8 million New Taiwan dollars allocated for its renovation. The school's 200-meter synthetic turf track and long jump area have suffered extensive wear and tear over two decades of high-intensity use.

Years of sun exposure, rain, and encroaching tree roots have led to a severely deteriorated track surface. Cracks, unevenness, and pooling water after rainfall have become common issues, posing risks to students, faculty, and community members who use the facility for physical education and athletic training. The current condition not only affects sports activities but also increases the likelihood of student injuries.

To address these problems, the renovation project will involve a complete overhaul. The existing track and base layer will be removed, followed by the installation of a new 4-centimeter asphalt concrete base and a 13-millimeter fully sealed PU track surface. The project also includes extending the straightaway by 6 meters and the long jump approach by 7.5 meters.

In addition to resurfacing, the renovation will tackle persistent issues of drainage and tree root damage. New linear drainage covers and root barrier walls will be installed. The project also encompasses leveling the field's turf, repairing the irrigation system, and removing hazardous trees, aiming to fundamentally improve the quality, safety, and durability of the entire sports complex.

The funding for this crucial project comes from the Ministry of Education's National Education Administration, which is subsidizing approximately 5.57 million New Taiwan dollars, with the school contributing the remainder. Local councilor Luo Yongzhen highlighted the safety concerns raised by parents, students, and residents over the years, emphasizing the importance of this renovation for the school and wider community.
