Taichung's Li Hai Braised Pork Rice to Say Goodbye End of August, Atom Street Legend Concludes

A beloved culinary institution in Taichung, "Li Hai Braised Pork Rice," is preparing to close its doors permanently at the end of August. The restaurant, a staple for over six decades, is a significant loss for the local food scene and a poignant end to a long-standing tradition.

The eatery gained fame for its signature braised pork rice, a dish that has been a local favorite for generations. The current owner, Wang Li-chu, who inherited the recipe from her father-in-law, Li Hai-yan, has decided to close the establishment due to the expiration of their lease and her inability to continue due to health reasons. This decision marks the end of an era for many long-time patrons.

"The braised pork rice from my neighborhood alley is Li Ah-hai from Atom Street!" wrote famous author Yang Shuang-tzu in the book "Let's Eat! Old Taichung," capturing the deep connection locals have with the restaurant. The original shop began operations in 1976 in the Central Market. Two years ago, it relocated to Liuchuan East Road following the market's closure in June 2024.

Li Hai-yan, the restaurant's founder, began selling braised pork rice from a street cart in the 1940s. He would sell his food in the evenings, catering to the clientele of nearby entertainment venues. His braised pork was known for its glossy, flavorful texture, complemented by pickled vegetables and a special chili sauce. The restaurant also served a perfectly stewed pig brain soup. For decades, the taste remained unchanged, evoking cherished memories for many. The closing signifies the end of this flavorful legacy, leaving many old-time Taichung residents and food lovers deeply saddened.
