Tainan government car catches fire in parking lot; security guard's efforts ineffective

A government vehicle spontaneously combusted at the Xinying Municipal Government parking lot in Tainan on the evening of July 22, 2026, prompting a swift response from emergency services. The incident, which occurred around 7:03 PM, involved a Mitsubishi SUV belonging to the Public Works Bureau.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire originated from under the hood, quickly escalating into a significant blaze. A security guard on duty attempted to combat the flames using three fire extinguishers, but his efforts were unsuccessful as the fire continued to spread within the engine compartment. The intensity of the fire necessitated the intervention of the Xinying Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and worked to extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, the incident resulted in no injuries to personnel, and the fire did not spread to any adjacent vehicles. The Mitsubishi SUV sustained considerable damage, particularly in the engine area.
