Taipei Mayor Calls to Abolish Examination, Control Yuans; DPP Challenges KMT Support

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has publicly advocated for the abolition of Taiwan's Examination Yuan and Control Yuan, two branches of government traditionally responsible for personnel and oversight respectively. This call has prompted a direct challenge from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

DPP legislative caucus whip Tsai Chi-chang stated that his party has long supported the dissolution of these two Yuans and has proposed it in previous constitutional amendment efforts. However, he noted that such amendments require a supermajority in the Legislative Yuan, a threshold the DPP cannot meet alone.

Tsai specifically addressed the opposition Kuomintang (KMT), pointing out their past opposition to abolishing the Examination and Control Yuans. He challenged the KMT, particularly in light of Mayor Chiang's recent statement, to demonstrate their support by backing a constitutional amendment. "If the KMT legislative members are willing to support it, the DPP can immediately propose a constitutional amendment," Tsai declared.

The effectiveness of any move to abolish the Yuans hinges on the KMT's stance, according to Tsai. He emphasized that if the KMT provides its backing, the proposed amendment could advance from the Legislative Yuan to a public referendum. Separately, Tsai confirmed he will complete his term as Chinese Professional Baseball League president until March next year and will not seek an extension.
