Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an pledges at least NT$300,000 in personal purchases from sheltered workshops

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an said he would personally buy at least NT$300,000 in products from sheltered workshops, responding with a purchase after earlier criticism over his position on donations.

Taipei city councillor Chin Hui-chu had urged Chiang and other officials to donate NT$200,000 each to support the workshops. She said she was disappointed when Chiang repeatedly avoided giving a direct response during a council session.

Chiang later confirmed that he had used the weekend to visit several sheltered workshops in Taipei. He said he wanted to understand their operating conditions and ask about orders ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival without attracting a large public entourage.

The mayor said Taipei’s Labor Department assists with the management and guidance of the workshops. He added that the city has purchased an average of NT$50 million in goods from them each year over the past three years. Their total revenue from January through July also rose compared with the same period last year, he said.
