Taipei Mayor Proposes Abolishing Control Yuan, Sparking Political Debate

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has proposed abolishing Taiwan's Control Yuan, a move that has garnered support from within the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party. KMT legislator Lo Chih-chiang endorsed the mayor's stance, calling the Control Yuan one of Taiwan's "two major tumors" in its democratic constitutional system. Lo urged the KMT and Taiwan People's Party caucuses to reject all 29 nominees for the next term of Control Yuan members, whose current term ends July 31. He suggested freezing the nominations as a first step toward constitutional reform. KMT legislator Hsu Chiao-hsin further amplified the debate by directly questioning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Shen Po-yang on his position regarding Chiang's proposal. Lo argued that the Control Yuan has become an "untrusted institution" due to perceived selective investigations and partisan bias, citing past instances where he claims the body favored the ruling party. He believes abolishing the institution is a necessary reform for Taiwan's democracy. Another KMT legislator, Lo Ting-wei, criticized the Control Yuan for allegedly neglecting major corruption cases while focusing on minor issues and defending controversial figures. The debate highlights a long-standing discussion in Taiwan about the necessity and function of the Control Yuan, with the opposition pushing for its elimination while the ruling party faces scrutiny over its past commitments to reform.
