Taipei to Reopen Three Keelung River Floodgates as Upstream Rain Eases

Heavy afternoon rain in Taipei forced the closure of three floodgates along the Keelung River, but the city said they would begin reopening from 5 p.m. as upstream rainfall eased.

The Nei 1, Nei 2 and Ji 11 gates were closed because of weather linked to a typhoon’s outer circulation and a low-pressure system. Taipei officials said the river level had begun to fall and that the gates would reopen once safety checks confirmed conditions were secure.

The three gates connect Taipei with important roads leading to Xizhi in New Taipei City. Once they reopen, the road outside the levee will also allow vehicles to pass again.

The city cautioned that weather conditions remained unstable and intermittent heavy rain could return. Drivers were urged not to park in river areas during periods of intense rainfall. The Water Resources Department also warned that low-water embankments, walkways and bicycle paths in riverside parks still contained fallen branches, mud and leaves.

To handle evening commuting and school traffic, Taipei’s traffic police and officers from the Neihu and Nangang precincts increased road monitoring. If congestion develops, police will deploy additional officers, adjust traffic signals and clear intersections.
