Taitung students win national volunteer awards for rural dedication

Taitung County Magistrate Orao Ching-ling has honored two local high school students for their outstanding volunteer work in rural communities. Huang Ming-hsuan from Taitung Girls' Senior High School and Yang Chung-yao from Kung Tung Vocational High School were among the 120 recipients nationwide of the "Dedication Award" at the 26th Taishin Youth Volunteer Elite Awards.

Huang has dedicated her efforts to rural education and the preservation of mother tongue culture. She engages in English teaching in remote areas and uses storytelling, video creation, and social media to share Hakka culture and international exchange experiences. Her goal is to promote the value of language and culture through methods familiar to younger generations.

Yang, meanwhile, has applied his carpentry skills to various community projects. He has participated in campus renovations, volunteer construction efforts, and skill promotion activities. He also contributed to post-disaster cleanup and material assistance, actively improving the learning environment in rural areas and embodying the vocational education spirit of "learning by doing."

Magistrate Orao emphasized that the value of youth volunteers lies not just in their service hours but in their proactive identification of local needs and their willingness to act. She noted that the two awardees showcase the diverse and creative volunteer energy of young people, demonstrating the warm, grounded, and giving nature of Taitung's youth. The county government, through its Volunteer Service Promotion Center, continues to integrate resources to support and encourage volunteerism across various sectors.
