Taiwan Approves Chang Hwa Bank's Phoenix Office to Target U.S. Market

Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) has greenlit Chang Hwa Commercial Bank's (CHB) plan to open a representative office in Phoenix, Arizona. This strategic expansion into the U.S. market is designed to bolster support for Taiwanese businesses operating and requiring financing in the region.

CHB currently operates a branch in New York and another in Los Angeles. The establishment of the Phoenix representative office signifies a continued effort by Taiwanese banks to deepen their presence and services in the United States. According to FSC data, a total of 11 domestic banks have established branches in the U.S., including major institutions like Bank of Taiwan, Land Bank of Taiwan, and CTBC Bank.

According to the Banking Bureau's Deputy Director, Chang Chia-kuei, CHB's initiative is in response to the financing needs of Taiwanese industries developing and operating in the U.S. The new office will provide integrated cross-border services. As of the end of June this year, CHB's overseas branches included subsidiaries in China, branches in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Manila, along with an office in Osaka and a representative office in Yangon, Myanmar.

The FSC also noted that Taiwanese banks have a significant footprint in the U.S., with 25 branches, 3 subsidiaries, and 4 representative offices. Arizona alone hosts one representative office and one loan office. This expansion by CHB underscores the growing economic ties and the importance of providing localized financial services to Taiwanese enterprises abroad.
