Taiwan: Body found at sea believed to be man missing for five days

A body was discovered in the Dong'ao sea area on the morning of June 4, believed to be a 39-year-old man who went missing five days earlier after being swept away by a large wave at Nan'ao's mysterious beach. The discovery was made by fishermen several dozen kilometers from the incident site.

The incident occurred late on May 31 when the man, identified by his surname Huang, and a woman, surnamed Pan, were walking near a sea cave at the beach. A sudden large wave engulfed them both. Pan, 49, managed to grab onto a buoyant backpack and was carried to a nearby fixed fishing net, where she clung to a float and used her mobile phone to call for rescue.

Emergency services were dispatched immediately. Pan was successfully rescued by helicopter in the early hours of June 1. She was conscious and had no apparent external injuries but showed signs of hypothermia. She was treated at a hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. Huang, however, disappeared into the sea.

The woman cleverly held onto a buoyant backpack and drifted with the waves, eventually reaching a nearby fixed fishing ground where she desperately held onto a float.

Initial police investigations revealed that Pan is from Changhua and Huang is from Kaohsiung. They were not a couple, and Huang's family stated they did not know Pan. Search efforts have been ongoing since the incident. Authorities are now working to retrieve the body and confirm its identity, as well as the exact cause of death.
