Taiwan candidate denies drug insinuation and demands apology within 24 hours

Taoyuan city council candidate Si Guangyang has denied insinuations by political commentator Wu Jingyi that he used marijuana while at university. He said he had “never smoked marijuana and never used any drugs.”

Si demanded that Wu remove the posts and publicly apologize within 24 hours. If she does not, he said, he will ask his lawyer to file a lawsuit.

He accused Wu of using suggestive photographs, text and video to create a false impression and damage his reputation. Si said such attacks had continued since he announced his candidacy.

Si has formally registered to run for office. He said Wu’s statements could constitute defamation under Article 310 of Taiwan’s Criminal Code, as well as spreading false information with the intent to prevent someone from being elected under Article 104 of the Election and Recall Act.
