Taiwan Enters New COVID-19 Epidemic Phase Amidst Sharp Case Increase

Taiwan has officially entered a new phase of its COVID-19 epidemic following a significant surge in infections. During the week of July 12–18, 4,766 people sought treatment, representing a 66.5% increase compared to the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The CDC also reported 25 domestic cases of severe COVID-19 complications and five deaths between July 14 and July 20. Since October 2025, Taiwan has recorded a total of 161 severe cases and 23 deaths linked to the virus. The NB.1.8.1 variant continues to be the dominant strain in Taiwan, accounting for infections over the past four weeks.

Common symptoms reported include sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, fever, fatigue, headache, and muscle aches. A small number of patients have experienced a temporary loss of smell or taste. Health authorities assure that Taiwan possesses adequate supplies of antiviral medications and vaccines, including publicly funded courses of Paxlovid, Xocova, and injectable Remdesivir, to manage the current outbreak.

Officials noted an increase in COVID-19 activity across various parts of Asia, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea, with positivity rates also rising in the Western Pacific region. With summer travel and large gatherings occurring, the CDC is urging the public to practice good hygiene, wear masks in healthcare facilities and crowded indoor settings, and ensure they are vaccinated.

Taiwan has extended eligibility for publicly funded COVID-19 vaccinations to individuals aged six months and older until July 31. Health officials emphasized that studies show vaccines remain effective in preventing infection and offer approximately 50% protection against severe illness.
