Taiwan Expresses Disappointment as Thai PM Backs 'One Country, Two Systems'

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has voiced disappointment and regret over Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's public support for China's "one country, two systems" policy. The statement came after Charnvirakul met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on December 18th, subsequently issuing a joint declaration that included affirming Taiwan as an inalienable part of China and supporting its peaceful reunification.

The ministry described the Thai government's actions as a blatant disregard for facts and a clear subservience to Beijing. It strongly protested and condemned China's repeated dissemination of false narratives that undermine Taiwan's sovereignty. Taiwan reiterated its status as a sovereign and independent nation, distinct from the People's Republic of China, and vowed not to tolerate China's attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo through cognitive warfare via bilateral statements.

Taiwan emphasized the close trade and people-to-people ties between Taiwan and Thailand. It urged the Thai government to cherish this long-standing friendship and refrain from aligning with China's suppressive tactics. Taiwan warned that continued cooperation with China's agenda could ultimately make Thailand itself a victim of Beijing's actions that disrupt regional peace and stability.
