Taiwan Faces COVID-19 Surge; Pingtung Urges Vaccinations Before Subsidy Ends

Taiwan is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases as the summer holiday travel season begins. In response, the Pingtung County Government is urging residents to get vaccinated, emphasizing that the current public subsidy for vaccinations ends on July 31.

Health authorities note that the domestic COVID-19 situation has entered an epidemic phase. With increased travel and large gatherings during the summer, the government advises continued adherence to preventive measures, including frequent hand washing, vaccination, and practicing cough etiquette. Mask-wearing is recommended in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, and when interacting with the elderly or immunocompromised individuals.

Data from Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control indicates that severe COVID-19 cases and fatalities are primarily concentrated among individuals aged 65 and older, and those with pre-existing chronic conditions. Notably, 74.5% of severe cases were over 65, 83.9% had chronic illnesses, and a significant 92.5% were unvaccinated for the current season.

The county health bureau is encouraging everyone aged six months and older who has not yet received this season's COVID-19 vaccine to do so before the subsidy deadline. High-risk groups, such as the elderly and immunocompromised, are advised to get a second dose if they received their first dose at least 180 days prior, to ensure comprehensive protection. The bureau also reminds individuals experiencing symptoms like fever or cough to wear masks, seek medical attention promptly, and consider using home rapid test kits.
