Taiwan Hospital Uses Advanced Scan to Pinpoint Recurrent Prostate Cancer

An-Nan Hospital in Tainan, Taiwan, has introduced PSMA PET/CT scans, a significant advancement in the fight against recurrent prostate cancer. This technology offers a precise solution for patients whose prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels rise after initial treatment, but for whom traditional imaging like CT and bone scans fail to locate the disease.

Prostate cancer is a common malignancy among Taiwanese men. When PSA levels increase post-surgery, radiation, or hormone therapy, it indicates the potential presence of remaining cancer cells. However, without knowing the exact location of these cells, doctors face difficulties in deciding on subsequent treatments, such as salvage radiation or hormone therapy. "PSA tells us cancer cells might still be there, but PSMA PET/CT helps us find where they are, giving subsequent treatment more direction," explained Dr. Chen Yi-Sheng, head of Urology at An-Nan Hospital.

The PSMA PET/CT scan utilizes the PSMA protein, which is highly expressed on prostate cancer cells, as a target. This allows for the accurate detection of even tiny lesions that might be missed by conventional imaging. According to Dr. Lin Yu-Yi, a nuclear medicine physician at the hospital, the technology transforms abstract PSA numbers into a concrete "map" of the disease. It enables a comprehensive whole-body assessment, effectively identifying metastatic lesions in lymph nodes, bones, or other areas, thereby significantly improving the accuracy of staging and recurrence evaluation.

An-Nan Hospital's Superintendent, Lin Sheng-Che, highlighted the introduction of PSMA PET/CT as a milestone in the hospital's commitment to precision cancer treatment. "We hope that through more sensitive imaging tools, we can help doctors detect lesions in cancer patients earlier and formulate precise treatment strategies, so that patients no longer just worry about PSA numbers but can truly grasp their disease status and treatment direction," he stated.
