Taiwan Kunqu Opera Embraces Tech for Immersive "Legend of the White Snake"

Taiwan's Kunqu Opera Troupe is pushing the boundaries of traditional performance with its upcoming premiere of "The Legend of the White Snake." The production, set to debut this weekend at the Taipei Performing Arts Center's spherical theater, leverages the venue's state-of-the-art sound system to immerse audiences in the classic "Legend of the White Snake" story.

The troupe's new production "The Legend of the White Snake" will premiere this Saturday, combining technology at the Taipei Performing Arts Center's spherical theater, with Wen Yu-hang also wearing 3D glasses for promotion.

This innovative approach treats sound as a primary narrative element, moving beyond its traditional role as accompaniment. The troupe's producer, Hong Dun-yuan, explained that the team began evaluating the immersive theater possibilities of the new sound system last year. They meticulously tested sounds in a small hemispherical immersive audio workstation before intensive rehearsals with actors, musicians, and martial arts instructors.

The spherical theater's unique design and blue aesthetic perfectly complement the "Water Flooding Jinshan Temple" segment of the story. The integrated Meyer Sound professional sound field system will simulate the dynamic sensation of water cascading from above or swirling around the audience, creating a powerful "water battle" immersion. This setup avoids complex hardware installations and directly echoes the "water" imagery central to the opera.

From the perspective of Kunqu opera's essence as an 'auditory art,' the bold innovation this time is to allow independent sound lines, traditional acoustic bands, and performers on stage to interweave and collide in real-time, producing organic chemical reactions.

Furthermore, the production incorporates real-time interactive control protocols (OSC), bridging the gap between physical instruments and 3D visuals. This allows visuals to synchronize with live musicians' performances and actors' rhythms, preserving the soul of traditional Kunqu opera where actors and percussion interact. Each performance will thus possess a unique, unreproducible quality. Audiences will receive 3D glasses upon entry, enhancing their engagement with the story's unfolding scenes.
