Taiwan Launches 'Han Kuang 42' Military Exercise with Massive Reserve Mobilization

Taiwan's armed forces have officially commenced the 'Han Kuang 42' live-fire exercise, a comprehensive 10-day, 9-night drill designed to bolster national defense capabilities. The exercise kicked off with readiness deployments and combat readiness maneuvers, simulating crucial actions taken before an enemy attack. A significant aspect of this year's drill is the mobilization of 20,000 reservists, with full brigade activations from units such as the Taipei Reserve Brigade and the Army's 137th Brigade. These reservists will integrate with active-duty forces to enhance troop integration, command and control, and logistical support. The 'Han Kuang 42' exercise is structured around several operational phases: readiness deployment, combat readiness and preservation, joint anti-landing operations, and deep defense and sustained combat. It employs a 'scripted, but not revealed' training model to sharpen soldiers' responses to various scenarios. Additionally, the exercise incorporates 'reverse briefings' and 'plan rehearsals' to improve commanders' decision-making and decentralized command capabilities. The drill also integrates with the 'Tongxin 36' exercise and the '2026 Urban Resilience (Air Defense) Exercise,' aiming to comprehensively assess joint operational capabilities, reserve mobilization effectiveness, and the overall civilian defense mechanism, thereby strengthening national defense resilience. Network slowdowns are scheduled for 30 minutes in central and northern regions on August 10 and 13, respectively.
