Taiwan Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu slams KMT whip Fu Kun-chi over budget talks

Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu publicly berated Kuomintang (KMT) caucus whip Fu Kun-chi for his repeated absence from crucial budget negotiations. Han accused Fu of "regent-like rule" and demanded his resignation during a meeting on the 2025 central government budget.

Fu Kun-chi had missed five subsequent negotiation sessions after reportedly using profanity during an earlier session in late July. He also did not authorize party cadres to negotiate on his behalf. Han expressed frustration, stating, "Are you playing us like monkeys? The Legislative Yuan is being controlled by dark forces!"

The legislative session was convened to discuss the "Republic of China 115th Fiscal Year Central Government Budget." After Han's strong remarks, the legislative body eventually reached a consensus. The budget is slated for a vote on August 14, with a potential follow-up session on August 17 if it is not passed.

In separate but related news, a KMT party member, Hsu Chun-ying, was sentenced to seven years in prison for five offenses, including interfering in elections by supporting Taipei mayoral candidate Huang Shan-shan and presidential candidate Ko Wen-je at the behest of China. She was also convicted of operating an underground exchange and defrauding banks.

Additionally, two Chinese nationals who allegedly used a rubber boat to cross into Taiwan near Bali on July 23 were apprehended in Taoyuan seven days later. While claiming to be lost fishermen, their possession of New Taiwan Dollars and the timing of their arrival before the Han Kuang military exercise have raised national security concerns, with authorities suspecting a "grey-zone" harassment test by China.
