Taiwan Police Foil Romance Scam, Save Man from Losing US$4,600

Police in Changhua, Taiwan, successfully intervened to prevent a romance scam that nearly cost a man NT$150,000 (approximately US$4,600). The man had become romantically involved with a woman he met on LINE, and their relationship quickly deepened. Under the guise of planning a future together and increasing their income, the woman persuaded him to invest in cryptocurrency.

He was guided to download a cryptocurrency trading platform and investment app, and was constantly shown information about profits. Believing he could achieve higher returns, he decided to borrow money against his insurance policy to invest more. However, an insurance agent noticed his unusual request and immediately contacted the police.

Officers from the Minzu Road Police Station reviewed the chat logs and identified the classic "fake dating, fake investment" scam. They explained to the man how such groups target individuals through social media, build trust with sweet talk, and then lure them into investing by promising high returns. Once money is transferred, victims often cannot recover their principal or profits.

Realizing he had fallen into an "love investment trap," the man immediately abandoned his plans to borrow against his policy and invest. His assets were successfully protected thanks to the timely alert from the insurance agent and the swift action of the police.
