Taiwan promotes 'U=U' HIV awareness with mobile campaign in Taichung

A mobile education vehicle is touring Taichung, Taiwan, as part of a campaign to promote understanding of the "U=U" (Undetectable = Untransmittable) principle regarding HIV.

The initiative, jointly organized by the Taiwan AIDS Society and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, seeks to educate the public about HIV and reduce the stigma associated with the virus. The vehicle will travel through key locations in Taichung over three days, broadcasting promotional videos featuring local celebrities.

According to Lo Yi-chun, Director-General of Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control, the nation has made substantial progress in HIV prevention. Taiwan has met its 2025 targets, with 93% of infected individuals knowing their status, 96% of those diagnosed receiving treatment, and 95% of treated individuals achieving viral suppression. This success rate surpasses the global average.

The "U=U" concept, officially recognized as a form of safe sex in Taiwan since 2021, signifies that individuals with a suppressed viral load have zero chance of transmitting HIV through sexual contact. This scientific understanding is crucial for fostering a supportive environment that encourages testing and treatment, ultimately aiming to end discrimination and stigma against people living with HIV.

The key to achieving the first '95' is to establish a friendly social environment that encourages people to get tested. 'U=U' means that if the virus is undetectable through stable treatment, the probability of HIV transmission through sexual contact is 0.
