Taiwan's 2027 defence spending to rise 16%, official media reports

Taiwan's Cabinet is set to propose a significant 16% increase in defense spending for 2027, which would push the budget past T$1 trillion (approximately S$39.27 billion) for the first time. The proposed allocation, exceeding T$1.1 trillion, is slated for unveiling on August 20 and will encompass funding for the coast guard, veterans affairs, and special projects. This budget will continue to represent more than 3% of Taiwan's gross domestic product.

The move to bolster military capabilities occurs against a backdrop of escalating military and political pressure from China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan strongly rejects these claims. Additionally, Taipei faces pressure from Washington to increase its own defense expenditures, a strategy mirrored by U.S. influence on European nations.

President Lai Ching-te has shown strong support for enhancing Taiwan's defense. The island nation has prioritized military modernization, including the development of indigenous submarines, in response to the perceived threat from China. China's military frequently operates around Taiwan and conducts periodic war games, while also rapidly modernizing its own forces with new aircraft carriers and stealth fighter jets.

Taiwan is currently participating in its annual Han Kuang military exercises. During a visit to drills in Taoyuan on August 9, President Lai emphasized the importance of consistent preparation, stating that "Every bit of solid preparation in peacetime adds another measure of stability and strength for our nation." His comments were shared on his official Facebook account.
