Taiwan's domestic demand sectors hit record highs in first half of 2026

Taiwan's domestic demand sectors are experiencing a robust boom, with wholesale, catering, and retail industries all setting new records for the first half of 2026. The Ministry of Economic Affairs reported that June's wholesale revenue reached an all-time monthly high, marking 17 consecutive months of positive growth.

In June, wholesale revenue totaled NT$1.704 trillion (approximately $52 billion), a 56.3% year-on-year increase. This surge was driven by strong demand in emerging technology sectors, boosting shipments of related supply chain goods. Notably, machinery and equipment wholesale grew by 105.5%, while chemical materials wholesale increased by 16.4%. Automotive, food, beverage, and tobacco wholesale also saw significant gains.

For the first half of the year, wholesale revenue hit a record NT$9.033 trillion (approximately $275 billion), up 32.8% from the previous year. The ministry forecasts July wholesale revenue to be between NT$1.680 trillion and NT$1.714 trillion, representing a 49.5% to 52.5% year-on-year increase.

Retail and catering sectors also posted record revenues for June and the first half of the year. Retail sales reached NT$421.3 billion (approximately $12.8 billion) in June, an 8% increase, fueled by a recovery in the automotive market and expanded operations, diverse marketing activities, and optimized product structures by businesses. Catering revenue for June was NT$89.2 billion (approximately $2.7 billion), a 4.6% rise, with restaurants and beverage shops showing growth due to expanded operations and promotional activities.
