Taiwan's Parliament Approves $7.56 Billion for Military Drone Acquisition

Taiwan's Parliament has approved a significant funding package, allocating NT$240 billion (approximately $7.56 billion) over six years to acquire military drones.

The legislation, passed with the support of the opposition parties Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP), earmarks NT$40 billion annually for drone purchases, with a priority given to domestically manufactured models. This funding will be integrated into the central government's annual budget.

This decision arrives as Taiwan faces heightened military pressure from Beijing. The island nation is increasingly emphasizing "asymmetric warfare" capabilities, focusing on systems like drones, missiles, and naval mines rather than traditional heavy weaponry.

Taiwan views the successful use of drones in conflicts, such as in Ukraine, as a key example for countering adversaries with superior military strength. The establishment of a robust drone fleet is now a primary defense objective for Taipei.
