Taiwan secures soybean supply amid production halt at feed ingredient supplier

Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture is taking steps to stabilize the supply of soybean meal, a crucial ingredient for animal feed, following production issues at a major supplier. Zhonglian Oil, a key producer of soybean meal, has temporarily halted operations due to concerns over excessive benzopyrene in some salad oil batches.

To mitigate the impact on the feed industry, the ministry has coordinated with other major oil refiners, including Datongyi and Taiwan Sugar, to increase their production. These efforts aim to boost the monthly output of soybean meal from 76,800 tons to 100,000 tons. Taiwan Sugar, which typically uses its soybean meal internally, will release 125 tons to 42 feed factories that previously sourced from Zhonglian Oil. The Livestock Production and Marketing Development Agency and the ROC Pig Farmers Cooperative will assist with registration and transportation.

With the increased production by Datongyi and Taiwan Sugar, and the production of full-fat soybean meal, nearly 100,000 tons of soybeans will arrive in early August, ensuring a stable supply of feed ingredients.

Furthermore, many feed factories are adjusting their formulations to use full-fat soybean meal instead of defatted soybean meal. The ministry also announced that nearly 100,000 tons of soybeans are scheduled to arrive in early August, with more shipments to follow, ensuring a steady supply of raw materials. These measures are expected to maintain the stability of the feed ingredient market.
