Taiwan to announce up to $30 billion US investment next week, US commerce chief says

Taiwan is expected to announce a new investment package in the United States worth between $20 billion and $30 billion next week, according to US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

Lutnick disclosed the figure in an interview with CNBC while discussing plans by the Trump administration to impose another round of tariffs on imported semiconductors. He confirmed that companies producing chips in the United States would be eligible for tariff relief.

"If you produce in America, we will give you tariff relief, and if you don't produce in America, then you're going to pay a tariff," Lutnick said. He compared the proposed semiconductor policy with the administration's approach to pharmaceutical companies that manufacture innovative medicines in the United States.

Lutnick said companies worldwide had committed about $1.2 trillion to semiconductor manufacturing in the United States. He said Taiwan's new investment announcement would form part of commitments linked to an earlier US-Taiwan trade agreement. He also claimed that the US share of global semiconductor production had risen from less than 2% when the administration took office and was moving toward 40%.

Taiwan's Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin provided a separate account of current investment. He said 20 semiconductor and AI server companies had announced $35 billion in US investments before Taiwan's participation in the SelectUSA event in May. Those companies later added another $20 billion, bringing Taiwanese investment in the United States this year to $55 billion.
