Taiwan to benefit from lower U.S. drone tariffs; lawmaker urges swift budget approval

Taiwanese companies exporting drones and components to the United States will benefit from a relatively low 15% tariff rate under a new U.S. "Drone 232 Tariff Measure" announced on August 13th. The Ministry of Economic Affairs confirmed that Taiwan will be subject to this preferential rate, which helps maintain the competitive edge of its drone industry in the American market.

This favorable tariff treatment, which does not stack with Most Favored Nation (MFN) tariffs, places Taiwan among countries like the EU, Japan, South Korea, and Switzerland. The U.S. measure imposes differentiated tariffs based on drone size and sensitivity, with large or sensitive drones facing a 100% tariff and medium-to-small drones originally subject to 25%. Taiwan's ability to secure the 15% rate is seen as advantageous.

The unmanned vehicle's development is both national defense and economic development.

Legislator Wang Ting-yu seized this opportunity to call for the swift approval of a 210 billion New Taiwan Dollar budget for military drones. He stressed that the development of unmanned vehicles is critical not only for national defense but also for economic growth. Wang urged lawmakers from the opposition parties to cease obstruction and expedite the review of the budget in the Legislative Yuan.

Wang highlighted that the favorable U.S. tariff conditions align with Taiwan's government policy of promoting a "non-red supply chain." The government intends to assist local manufacturers in meeting U.S. verification requirements to further expand their presence in the American market. The legislator emphasized the strategic importance of unmanned vehicles in both global security and industry, urging a unified national effort to advance this sector.
