Taiwanese Father's Harsh Discipline Leads to Son's Extended Protective Care

A 10-year-old boy in Nantou, Taiwan, remains in protective care after his single father's repeated beatings for incomplete homework led to his removal from the home. The father, described as a "tiger dad," has a strict approach to his son's education, frequently resorting to physical punishment for unfinished assignments or un-signed communication logs.

Neighbors reported the father's actions twice before a recent incident, where the boy was injured for not completing his homework and having an unsigned contact book, prompted another report. Social workers intervened and placed the boy in emergency care. The father subsequently requested three months of care, which was granted.

During his time in care, the boy expressed fear of his father and often refused meetings. When meetings did occur, the father focused solely on the boy's academic attitude and performance, causing the child significant anxiety and stress. The boy has repeatedly stated he is not ready to return home.

Social workers assessed that the father-child relationship requires further communication and that the boy has developmental issues and a slower learning pace than his peers. Despite knowing this, the father continued his strict discipline and corporal punishment. As there are no other suitable caregivers available to protect the child, the county government successfully applied to the Nantou District Court for an additional three-month extension of care.
