Taiwanese hit musical 'The Three Sisters of Persuasion' sells out, eyes Broadway

Taiwan's acclaimed original Chinese musical, "The Three Sisters of Persuasion," has achieved a new milestone, selling out over 50,000 tickets across 32 shows for its third national tour. This remarkable achievement has once again broken the box office record for a local musical production.

The success has paved the way for an ambitious international expansion. Hou Tsung-jen, CEO of the producing company Sonicues, announced that a Broadway-bound English version has been in development for two years. A second reading is slated for New York in September, with hopes of finalizing the English script by year-end and moving into the fundraising phase.

Hou emphasized that the musical's success is a collective achievement of Taiwan's theater industry, but stressed Sonicues' determination to push Taiwanese intellectual property onto the global stage. He noted that bringing a foreign musical to Broadway typically requires 5 to 10 years of preparation and a significant investment of $18 million to $20 million USD.

Despite the challenges, Hou, who joined the company three years ago, is committed to pursuing international opportunities. Leveraging his extensive experience in cross-border ventures, he aims to establish Sonicues as a "national team" capable of competing on the international market through a corporate-scale business model. The company has also secured substantial support from "Zhi Sheng Industrial," a semiconductor equipment manufacturer, which has provided funding and a new, professional rehearsal space, significantly improving the working environment for artists.
