Taiwanese legislator Huang Jie supports Public TV, warns against political sacrifice

Taiwanese legislator Huang Jie has publicly voiced her support for the Public Television Service (PTS), urging lawmakers to engage in rational budget deliberations. Amidst proposals to cut or freeze PTS's budget by NT$1.02 billion, Huang emphasized the vital role public broadcasting plays in ensuring cultural equity for all citizens, regardless of their ethnicity, language, age, or economic status.

Huang visited the PTS Taiwanese dialect channel's southern center in Kaohsiung, sharing footage of her visit. She highlighted that PTS does more than just produce programs; it ensures equal access to culture and public information. The establishment of the southern center in Kaohsiung, she noted, not only provides more local perspectives and reporting but also creates media job opportunities in the region.

During her visit, Huang interacted with PTS Taiwanese dialect channel staff, inquiring if speaking Taiwanese was a requirement for employment. She also pointed out that approximately 30% of the channel's programs are produced in Kaohsiung, expressing a desire for this proportion to increase. Huang specifically praised the PTS production "Sapphire KTV Show," calling its success this year remarkable and a testament to the value of public broadcasting, particularly for southern Taiwan and Kaohsiung residents who directly relate to the content.
