Jiuru Township Mayor Lan Tsung-hsin, who is seeking re-election, is currently unable to speak following vocal cord surgery. He explained on Facebook that prolonged speaking had caused nodules to form on his vocal cords, necessitating a recent minimally invasive procedure.

However, the mayor faces a significant challenge: his doctor has ordered a 10-day period of absolute silence. For Lan, who enjoys engaging with and listening to his constituents, this enforced quiet is a difficult task. He anticipates communicating through nods, smiles, hand gestures, or speaking very softly and slowly, emphasizing that any perceived coldness is merely him following medical advice.
