Taiwanese Minister Confirms DPP Official's Relative Missing in China

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has confirmed a report concerning the disappearance of a relative of a high-ranking official from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) after traveling to mainland China.

The issue was brought to light during a legislative session by opposition legislator Hsieh Lung-chieh, who alleged that the individual went missing in China. Various rumors circulated online, suggesting involvement in criminal activities, detention for political reasons, or simply losing contact during travel.

We received notification of this case on the afternoon of the 28th and will actively assist in handling it.

MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng initially stated that the council was notified of the case on the afternoon of July 28 and would actively assist. However, MAC later clarified that they had been aware of the situation since early July but the family had not formally requested their help. The council reiterated its commitment to provide assistance if the family requires it.

Legislator Hsieh pressed for clarification on whether the case involved criminal activity or was a simple disappearance, with Minister Chiu offering to have MAC staff visit the family to offer support. The MAC's statement highlighted the sensitive nature of such cases and the government's role in facilitating communication and assistance for its citizens abroad.
