Taiwanese presidential office budget cut impacts orders for sheltered workshops

A recent political maneuver in Taiwan, involving the freezing of the presidential office's discretionary fund by opposition parties, has had an unintended but significant impact on vulnerable communities. The decision has led to the cancellation of 15,000 Mid-Autumn Festival gift box orders that were intended for 37 sheltered workshops and disability organizations across the country.

In Yilan County, the Lanxin Women and Children Center, Lanzhi Social Welfare Foundation, and the Ai Gongfang of Taipei Veterans General Hospital Yuanshan Branch were among those affected. Huang Shu-ling, founder of the Lanxin Center, explained that her staff had excitedly prepared ingredients and packaging for 150 gift boxes, a ¥100,000 order from the presidential office. The subsequent cancellation left the team disheartened, facing non-refundable costs for materials.

However, the situation has seen a positive turn thanks to the generosity of the public. Upon learning of the cancellations, private citizens and philanthropists have stepped in to place new orders, helping to compensate for the lost business. As of now, 95 of the 150 boxes canceled by the presidential office have been reordered by the public for the Lanxin Center. Similarly, the Lanzhi Foundation, which typically receives orders for 300 boxes from the presidential office, has also seen public support with 150 boxes reordered.

These gift boxes represent a crucial source of income for the Lanxin Center and other similar organizations. The Mid-Autumn Festival orders are particularly important for their financial stability. The response from the public highlights a strong sense of community support for these workshops, which provide employment and opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

While the political dispute over the budget has created financial challenges, the outpouring of support from individuals demonstrates a collective effort to ensure these vital social enterprises continue their work. Organizers hope for continued public assistance to fully cover the shortfall caused by the canceled orders.
